We all know the world lost the talented Betty White just shy of her 100th birthday but we, or at least I, did not know that she had been working on a new documentary, which was to air on her 100th birthday. That is, today, January 17.
Originally called, "Betty White: 100 Years Young — A Birthday Celebration", the title was subsequently changed to "Betty White: A Celebration" after her death on December 31, 2021, when the directors pivoted to make the movie a celebration of her life rather than of her birthday.
The film includes looks at her life both of in front of and behind the cameras. That is, at her home life and her working life. It includes looks into shows like The Golden Girls, Saturday Night Life, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Hot in Cleveland; interviews with friends and actors like Ryan Reynolds, Tina Fey, Carol Burnett, Valerie Bertinelli, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Morgan Freeman; and, shares final interview, which was given shortly before her death.
TRAILER
WHERE TO WATCH?
This documentary is being released today, January 17, 2022, in movie theatres. I do not think it is very often that documentary films make appearances at the movie theatres. Sure, there are a lot of stories like biopics but not so many actual documentary films are shown on the big screen. Interestingly, it is a special one-day-only release. Where it goes from there, I do not know though I presume it will appear on a streaming network.
GOODBYE
Goodbye, Betty White. I have not seen the film yet but definitely will. As it turns out and not deliberately, the film will be a form of goodbye to White for her fans. It also includes a goodbye from White to us as she took a couple of minutes during filming to give thanks to her fans for always being there. A totally natural, unscripted, genuine moment. I cannot wait to see it.
Stay tuned for details on where you can watch Betty White: A Celebration.
This set bundles together The Planet Earth series and The Blue Planet Seas of Life and features 190 minutes of special features.
Planet Earth shares action and intimate wilderness scenes; mountains and rivers; tough habitats where the creatures of the earth struggle to survive.
The Blue Planet: Seas of Life is a beautiful exploration of the marine world sharing "the mysteries of the deep, coastline populations, sea mammals, tidal and climatic influences, and the complete biological system that relies on and revolves around the world's oceans." This series won two Emmy's for Outstanding Cinematography Non-Fiction and Outstanding Music Composition.
"Planet Earth takes you to places you have never seen before, to experience sights and sounds you may never experience anywhere else." As this quote from the BBC says, Planet Earth will take you to some pretty impossible, truly amazing locations. It will share with you both rare action scenes and intimate moments in the wilderness. You will travel through the mountains and the rivers and you will see Earth's hardest habitats where creatures are trying to survive.
Planet Earth: The Complete Series took five years and $25 million dollars to make. It took 2,000 days and 200 sites. It took 40 cameramen and a lot of high definition technology.
Was it worth it? Most definitely, the resulting television series is considered stunning and may quite possibly be the best nature series on earth. People do rave about it.
Planet Earth: The Complete Series is an 11-part high-definition BBC production that includes these episodes: From Pole to Pole, Mountains, Fresh Water, Caves, Deserts, Ice Worlds, Great Plains, Jungles, Shallow Seas, Seasonal Forests, Ocean Deep. It also includes 110 minutes of behind-the-scenes information with a ten minute segment devoted to each episode. Plus, it includes a feature called Planet Earth: The Future which is a three-part, 2 1/2-hour series that looks at what is coming in the world for endangered animals, endangered habitats and even ourselves.
Amazon customer Igor Mencos raves about the quality, saying he had seen it on DVD and that the Blu-ray was even better than he expected it would be. Customer Lee says simply, "It does not get any better than this" and warns that once you start watching you won't be able to stop. Finally, Brundogg says the series is "absolutely amazing."
You can learn more about or buy your copy of Planet Earth from Amazon by clicking right here. It is available on Amazon Video but actually less expensive at this moment on blu-ray disc.
"The exciting true story of a vanishing American and his special kind of freedom."
The Great American Cowboy is a 1973 documentary film narrated by Joel Mc Crea, a member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame. It looks inside the rodeo with then modern day cowboys telling the story of rivals Larry Mahan and Phil Lyne as they compete for the National Finals Rodeo Championship title. It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature (1974).
The film is shown here in Walt Disney packaging though I did read that Disney acquired the rights to the film rather than actually making it. One original movie poster that I saw reads "A Rainbow Adventure Films release" while IMDB says that the production companies are American National Enterprises and Merrill-Rodeo Film Productions.
If you are searching for a copy of this film on DVD or VHS, you can try the Amazon listings here and you can try eBay herebut be warned, this appears to be another one of those films that has not made the transition from VHS to DVD. Good luck with your search and be sure to report back and let us know if and when this movie becomes widely available.
Have you seen The Great American Cowboy? Is it a documentary film that you have been wanting to see or is this the first time you have heard of it?

Super Speedway features racing father and son, Mario and Michael Andrettis and Paul Newman narrating. It uses footage shot from cameras mounted on both of their Indy-type race cars and, therefore, provides an excellent point of view. Plus, of course there is the SOUND of the race. You'll need to fasten your seatbelt for this Imax film and you might want to note that this was blu-ray.com's second highest rated Imax blu-ray movie in 2010.
Reviews from viewers of Super Speedway are amazing with comments like that of Paul D. Ferguson who said that this film had an especially good human interest angle when it looked at the family of Andretti. He enjoyed the multi-faceted look into the speedway world which included technology, history and social elements. He eventually says, "The story arc gently draws you to the racing track, immerses you in the raw excitement of driving at over 200 MPH, and then eases you back out to the real world, your heart still pounding." He does says that the cars are naturally VERY exciting but that this film is not just about the speed. It is also about the people involved from drivers to designers.
With regard to the blu-ray release, DVD Verdict commented first on the fact that blu-ray technology inches us closer to the IMAX theatre experience. They thought that Super Speedway was one of the best films they had ever seen. DVD Talk said that they were surprised by how enjoyable Super Speedway was, particularly since they are not big car fans. About the quality, they said it is SPECTACULAR and a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED DISC.

Wild Ocean shares the water world of the Wild Coast of Africa and illustrates how the creatures that live in that water depend on man and the efforts the inhabitants of that part of the world are going to to save this wildlife. "Hope is alive on the Wild Coast where Africa meets the sea."
Reviews are a bit mixed for Wild Oceans but it seems that detractors are disappointed that this film does not have some of the ride-like features of some Imax films. I'd encourage you to read them for yourself. If it is a documentary that you are looking for, it sounds like Wild Ocean delivers. Midwest Book Review says that Wild Ocean is spectacular and award winning and that it "is an unforgettable tour of the daily struggle for survival among ocean wildlife and a reminder of the ecological wonders beneath the waves that are perilously endangered by the encroaches of mankind."
DVD Talk says that Wild Ocean is gorgeous and one of the best Imax blu-ray releases to date. They call the transfer strong and the extras interesting and informative. They HIGHLY RECOMMEND it for those who love nature documentaries. Blu-ray Definition says that Wild Ocean features captivating imagery and reference-quality definition. For nature lovers AND for those who want to show of their home theatre, they also recommend this film.
"You can forget about all those old-school Imax tricks here. Five minutes into Fighter Pilot, your stomach will be doing the rumba when an F-15 Eagle zooms straight up into the sky (the land beneath going, going, gone) and then . . . starts . . . spinning." - Washington Post
An exciting film - enter the cockpit with some of the world's best pilots and see some of the most challenging flying of their careers. Even children love it with little boys in particular fall for it. Your children will surely want to be a pilots after watching this film.
Big Picture, Big Sound warns that this is a short film designed to show off jet planes - not an indepth documentary.

That's it. My list of the Best Nature and Adventure Documentary films. I know that it will help you pick some wonderful documentary films for your collection.
Please note that I have just moved this list from another website. It was originally created in 2008 but updated yearly until 2012. It is therefore due for an update soon. However, even if it has not been updated recently, I believe that it is still an excellent reference list of top-rated documentary films that are available on blu-ray disc for your viewing pleasure at home.
On April 15, 1912, 101 years ago today, the Titanic sunk to her watery grave taking 1,502 men, women and children with her. The tragedy has never been forgotten. It continues to hold the interest of people around the world and historians and scientists are still trying to figure out exactly why this great, unsinkable ship, perhaps the best ship ever built by the year 1912, sunk on her maiden voyage.
This winter my continued interest in the ship found me watching a number of the new Titanic documentary films, as well as a couple of the new movies.
I was surprised at some of the more recent theories about why The Titanic sank.
If you are interested in the history of the Titanic, you will likely be interested in those results, too.
I particularly enjoyed Titanic at 100 Mystery Solved, which is a highly scientific look at the sinking and Titanic's Final Mystery, which delved a bit more into the human side of the tragedy, as well as the role of the perfectly calm weather that fateful night.
Filmed in southern California, Imax's Deep Sea will let you swim with some of the earth's most exotic creatures.
Filmed by Howard Hall (who created Into The Deep), Deep Sea features narration by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. The real stars of the show are, of course, the individuals who sport fins and scales...like the Green Sea Turtles, the Humboldt Squid and the Mantis shrimp.
Blu-ray.com cautioned about raised expectations with regard to this film because it is a 41 minute documentary but recommended it for families wanting to check out the undersea world and it is worth noting that Imax films are shorter than feature length movies. However, Blu-ray.com called Deep Sea a captivating "a captivating undersea documentary, an excellent video transfer, an unexpectedly solid audio track, and a bonus, full-length IMAX film (also presented in 1080p.)"
Reviewer comments include one that recommends using this blu-ray disc if you are unable to visit the underwater world. This film includes "stunning footage of the vast and amazing sea creatures known to man." Another viewer added that blu-ray is necessary to truly appreciate this documentary film. To read more of the Amazon customer reviews of Deep Sea, simply click here.
Here's a look at the film, via the trailer:
As the tag line says, you will "Sea Life In A New Way."
The trailer is out for Disneynature's upcoming Earth Day nature documentary film, Chimpanzee.
Chimpanzee tells the story of an orphaned chimp in the forests of Africa. It is, I believe, the first Disney Nature film to tell a story and it looks like a cute film.
Watch the official video trailer and see for yourself. It is bound to be another highly anticipated film for nature documentary lovers.
Read more about Disney's Chimpanzee Documentary on Amazon by clicking here.
If you love the circus, you will love this six-hour PBS series from 2010 called 'Circus.' It follows a year in the life of The Big Apple Circus.
The Big Apple Circus is a hugely popular European-style, non-profit circus whose base is in New York. In 2010, they presented a whopping 350 shows to adoring audiences.
In this series, you will travel with them for that year. You will enjoy the artistry as it is presented in the big ring. You will enjoy the drama behind the scenes. You will have a quick peek into what it is like to be a member of a travelling circus and, if you are like certain members of my family, you will want to run away and join the circus.
Vincent Van Gogh: A Brush With Geniusis an interesting and educational look at the man, his artwork and the places that inspired him. This film, unlike many others, actually focuses on his art rather than his illness making it, I believe a bit unusual. It is a beautiful film that features incredible quality since it was created to be shown on Imax screens.
I've always had a fascination with Vincent Van Gogh and I love many of his pieces of art. I knew little about the man and enjoyed my role as an armchair traveller recently when I watched this film. I think it would be of interest to anyone who loves learning about famous artists, good for classroom use and particularly good for anyone travelling to Amsterdam (where the Van Gogh museum is) and/or any of the other sites that Van Gogh is noted for working from.
That is, by the way, exactly how the film proceeds. It shows the making of this film and travels to many of the sites that Vincent Van Gogh painted in. An interesting trip to Europe could be one that followed in the footsteps of the artist and this film. I know I would have enjoyed seeing this documentary film BEFORE I went to Europe and visited the Vincent Van Gogh museum.
And the blu-ray quality? High-Def Digestcalls it "reference quality video transfer and a highly active audio presentation."
The next DisneyNature film is going to be African Cats. African Cats follows three other successful Disney Nature productions...Crimson Wing, Earth and Oceans. All were magnificent, if Earth was somewhat contentious.
Lovers of African mammals will likely love this new documentary set in the African savanna and following, as it does, the lives of two wild cat families ~ lions and cheetahs. Following Disney's tradition with these new nature documentaries, African Cats arrives in theatres around the world on Earth Day, April 22, 2011 and yes, once again, Disney will make a contribution on behalf of everyone who attends the movie during opening week this time in support of 'African Cats, Save The Savanna.'

This post was written in advance of the release. You can now add DisneyNature's African Cats nature documentary to your collection from Amazon by clicking right here.
Disneynature Oceans arrived on Blu-ray and DVD on October 19, 2010. A beautiful documentary film for which the Blu-ray was NOT a disappointment. The experts raved. "No matter how you look at it, the Blu-ray edition of Oceans is a must-own," said Blu-ray.com. "DisneyNature's Oceans comes highly recommended," said High-Def Digest.
The Magic of Flight is a 39-minute Imax film, which takes
you soaring starting with the first flight flown by the Wright Brothers (1903)
and with the Blue Angels and their maneuvers. It is a tribute of sorts to
aircraft and to people who fly and is narrated by Tom Selleck.
The Magic of Flight was seventh on the list of the best Imax
Blu-ray movies in 2008. Definitely a great choice if you love airplanes and
flying. It is an older movie that was shot in 1996 and so is of a different quality than
those being made with today's Blu-ray technology.
On this page, you will find some information about this Imax
documentary film including short reviews, links to excellent and more detailed reviews and the trailer.
Imax documentary movies take us to new worlds. Read on to
take flight with The Magic of Flight.
REVIEWS
The Magic of Flight has been called, "Astonishing and gut jolting."
DVD Talk says that the aerial film included in this program is both stunning and exciting. "Having a nosecone's view of vertigo inducing quick rolls and drops is really an amazing experience."
Blu-ray.com says that this film is impressive particularly its audio track that reproduces everything from the thunder of jet engines to the detail of a near-silent flock of birds.
As always, ordinary viewers like you and I are disappointed with the length of this Imax film, which is just 37 minutes long. However, they are not disappointed with the footage, which is amazing in high definition. Reportedly, it cost somewhere in the vicinity of a million dollars a minute to make this IMAX footage. Pretty impressive. See for yourself in the official trailer:
Fans of BBC nature documentaries absolutely love Life by David Attenborough.
And fans of Planet Earth are simply thrilled to have a new nature series available on DVD and blu-ray.
Note that there are two versions available, one featuring David Attenborough and one featuring Oprah Winfrey. Favour definitely goes to the first version. The Discovery Channel version is just not nearly as beloved by fans as evidenced when you compare the customer reviews of the two versions of this documentary on Amazon. You can see what I mean by taking a look at the star ratings on Amazon by clicking right here.
How about you? Do you love a good nature documentary? Which version do you think is better?
Sea Monsters A Prehistoric Adventure is a National Geographic presentation which has an interesting story line. It follows a sea creature in a prehistoric time (Dolly). The story flips between a fictional tale in Dolly's world and the work of scientists in ours.
Sea Monsters A Prehistoric Adventure is now available on DVD and blu-ray in your choice of 3D or not. I've read mixed reviews about the 3D version. Some love it and some don't. You can read the Amazon customer reviews for yourself by clicking right here. They might help you decide which version of this movie you want to own.
This movie is not one of the advanced new 3D movies and you will have to wear the red and blue glasses that come with it. Fortunately, if you are interested in this documentary, you will not need a 3D blu-ray player nor a 3D HDTV.
You may have already seen or heard of the BBC's LIFEseries featuring narration by David Attenborough. It is also possible you may have seen or heard of the same series featuring narration by Oprah Winfrey. Somehow, I missed both.
Are you a nature documentary fan? If so, you will want to add this BBC series to your wish list, as I have done, because it sounds absolutely amazing. Available on blu-ray or DVD, it most certainly sounds like this is the kind of film you buy when you want to see one of the best nature documentaries around and you want to experience them in the best quality possible on your HDTV and blu-ray player.
Life, was originally a 10-part series which aired on the BBC and on the Discovery Channel. It shares the lives of creatures from every continent and habitat on our earth and it shares in unexpected, unimaginable, extraordinary and extreme conditions.
Take a peek at the trailer and decide for yourself:
Does Life look like a film you would enjoy? Do you enjoy nature documentaries? Will you be adding it to your to-watch list?
Finally, Disneynature's Crimson Wing is coming to North America in a slightly more affordable format than the previously available imported blu-ray disc. If you have been waiting and watching you can relax now and mark your calendar for October 19, 2010, the date when Crimson Wing comes to us in blu-ray in DVD.
If you cannot wait, of course Crimson Wing is available right now as an import from Amazon by clicking right here where you can order it from Amazon directly or from Amazon's private sellers at a slight discount.
If you prefer to wait in order to save a bit of money, you are able to pre-order Crison Wing by clicking right here and you will be protected by Amazon's price guarantee meaning that if the price goes down between now and the release date, you will receive your purchase at the lowest of the prices.
"In the harshest place on earth, love finds a way,” announces Morgan Freeman and he is right. March of the Penguins is a love story, which portrays the struggles of the Emperor penguin to survive in one of the most difficult parts of the earth, Antarctica.
March of the Penguins is a National Geographic Feature Film production from 2005. It is an Academy Award winning film and won an Oscar that same year for the Best Documentary Feature film.
Watch March of the Penguins and you will learn a lot about these handsome birds…about how year in and year out they follow the same migration path to find their mate and bear young. It is definitely a love story but also a story of survival of the fittest.
The Blu-ray? Well, after reading some grumbles from the Amazon customer reviews, I was surprised to see that both High-Def Digest and Blu-ray.com recommend this film on Blu-ray.
It is a wonderful nature film and is great family entertainment, deemed suitable for children from kindergarten age and up. If you love nature films, you will enjoy this one. The penguins are spellbinding.
A friend asked me today, "Why was I watching The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter?" I couldn't answer except perhaps to say that I do like many of the Rolling Stones songs and I am intrigued by the history of both the band and the era.
Gimme Shelter is a remastered Criterion Collection release that is available on both blu-ray and DVD. A 1970 film, the new versions were released on December 1st, 2009.
Some call Gimme Shelter "the greatest rock film ever made" and "one of the greatest documentaries ever created." It follows the Stones on their 1969 U.S. tour with a particular focus on the 300,000 person free concert at San Francisco’s Altamont Speedway. I am thankful that the cameras were there as they recorded an unbelievable era and a concert the likes of which I hope will never happen again.
Of course, it features the band members -- Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman -- a few years younger than they are now. It was supposed to feature The Rolling Stones Altamount Speedway free concert in Northern California and it did.
That concert at the speedway was also supposed to be the West Coast’s version of Woodstock but things went badly wrong from the very beginning when Jagger was hit in the mouth and the concert and film wound up being a very dark experience with everything from bad acid trips to the stabbing death of a concert goer. It turned out to be a concert and documentary like no other and may have helped end the 'Peace and Love' hippy movement, a time as evidenced on this documentary, without rules and order.
Let me warn you that, while this film is interesting from a history and music perspective, it is also disturbing. Not rated, it has plenty of alcohol, drugs, nudity and violence to be aware of. The video, which follows, gives you a peek at the contents of this film.
Because I have limited access to blu-ray movies, I watched it on DVD and therefore turn to the experts to see what they have to say about the blu-ray format of Gimme Shelter. High-Def Digest is able to highly recommend it and considers the blu-ray a good transfer, considering the quality of the original 16 mm material. Others concur that this is the best Gimme Shelter will ever look.
It took a while for Disneynature's The Crimson Wing to be available on Blu-ray disc in North America. It may have been released in Europe first because it was a joint British, French and America project. After that it opened in the United Kingdom and Italy. North Americans continued to wait but it is now available on Amazon on Blu-ray disc by clicking right here.
It's a beautiful film, with an important environmental issue as the breeding ground of millions of flamingos in Northern Tanzania that are considered threatened. Hopefully, this film can help get that message out.
